They didn't have time, so they won't pay me for mine
This team (2 co-founders + 1 primary team member) was the dream client. Enthuasiastic, committed, trusting, and responsive at first.
But then they got busy - this happens, I'm often flexible with my clients on timelines and don't want to pressure them too much, as what I do is implementing new tech and rushing that process never works.
While they were busy, I did what I could in the background, but I have a hard rule: I don't turn on automated workflows without clear client review and approval.
That's what took them weeks. Months even. I sent a spreadsheet of workflows + links + exactly what they needed to review. I sent them recorded videos of exactly how/where to review them.
I recieved little response. Eventually they asked for a live video call to walk through the above workflows. I said yes, of course. They booked it for a few weeks out, and then cancelled day of and said they wouldn't be paying the final invoice installment as they didn't think I delivered on the project because nothing was automated yet.

Attempts to resolve dispute:
First, flexible timelines for them, giving them the space and time to find capacity for reviewing our project.
Then, ensuring they had multiple formats for the information I was sharing: written, video, email, slack, cross posted everywhere.
An email check in here and there.
A live walk through.
And finally, when they refused to pay my final invoice installment, I reminded them that I already reduced our scope, discounted their original cost, and that this final invoice reflect hours I ACTUALLY worked and deliverables I had clearly laid out for them.
My bad: I don't charge late payment fees and I don't withhold final deliverables until payment is resolved... until now. My contracts have changed because of this client.
