Not Fit For Purpose

We purchased a fully fitted widebeam canal boat, which, when delivered had considerable defects including electrical faults, issues with the hot water and heating, deviations from the agreed specification, and a missing declaration of conformity to the recreational craft directive, so we couldn’t get a river licence.

Attempts to resolve dispute:

After 3 months of failed snag fixes we rejected the boat, but were told it is not returnable. We enlisted a surveyor to carry out a full survey of the vessel, which found further faults including hazardous wiring, incorrectly installed components and a vent hole so low to the waterline that it could not be classed as a category D vessel. Still the boatbuilder refused to take the boat back, or to enlist his own surveyor in order to agree a schedule of works to fix the issues. A year on and we still can’t get a river licence, the boat is uninsured and needs lifting out of the water for a refit which has been estimated at around £85k.
